Digital Displays: a Little More About High Definition
Last week, I made a simple point in this space, namely that even if a display device, such as an LCD or plasma, is flat doesn? T mean that? S capable of displaying high-definition content in the context of messaging digital signage. As an examination of last week? S column, a billboard can be SD, or standard definition, ED, or enhanced definition, or HD, high definition. Display consist of image elements, called pixels. Basically, the idea is the number of pixels, the higher the resolution of an image. For example, an SD with a display of 704 pixels (horizontal) x 480 (vertical) has less resolution than the ED display 852 x 480 pixels. HD displays, which have more pixels and are at the top of the food chain for resolution displays, come in three flavors: 720p, 1080i and 1080p. (More information on this? I? And '? P? In a moment.) A screen high definition 720p has 1280 pixels (horizontal) x 720 (vertical), 1080i and 1080p displays have 1920 pixels by 1080 pixels , or more than 2 million people Picture elements. The letters? I? And? P? Stand for interlaced and progressive, respectively. Interlaced displays, as usual, and 1080i HDTV televisions, paint individual lines of pixels and forth up and down through the display on the odd numbered rows (in HDTV are 1, 3, 5? 1079 ) first, and evens (2, 4, 6? 1080) before starting the process over and over again. Taken together the odd lines? Area? And on the same field line numbered create one? Frame? Or the complete picture. There are 30 images displayed by these second.Progressive displays, such as computer monitors and HDTV 1080p display lines sequentially (1, 2, 3? 1080) before starting the process again. These screens HD 1080p paint 60 new images on the screen every second. With a doubling of the frame rate (60 versus 30), 1080p requests twice the amount of data 1080i. This difference in frame rate means different things to different stakeholders high definition. Marketing with a HD as the display technology in a digital signaling network, 1080p is the high-end image quality, they can expect to achieve for the foreseeable future. If the message communication requires the highest resolution, 1080p may be the right choice. However, 1080p displays are more expensive and there will be a price to pay in terms of content storage required to drive messaging. To that broadcasters who have to work in compliance with the laws administered by the FCC for the transmission of HD 1080p too. Just give what they have to work with, 1080p is beyond their capacity to deliver. Thus, 720p and 1080i are the dissemination HD formats. To film studios who want to distribute their films in the largest display format available at home, 1080p is the answer. Much of the buzz on Blu-ray and HD-DVD optical discs is, in part, about the ability to compete with formats to deliver superb image quality. These formats? And their use of a blue laser frequency with a shorter wavelength which can write more data per unit area and storage were designed to be able to write all of 1080p data on the hard drive that ? Required reading for a long film plus bonus material. But here? S the largest party in the equation of the HD 1080p resolution: the audience. If you are a digital marketing, a broadcaster or a film studio, you are faced with the same question: How do I deliver affordable, the level of quality to my audience that meets my goal of communication desired? In other words, how much the resolution is sufficient for communications task at hand? Only you can answer this question. To illustrate how the answer is subjective, consider this: ABC, ESPN, Fox and My Network TV rely on 720p, or 720 progressive lines, while for the service HD NBC, CBS and PBS rely on 1080i. Maybe before deciding what level of resolution HD is most appropriate for your high definition digital signage network, you should flip between ESPN? S? Sportscenter HD? (720),? The Tonight Show with Jay Leno? (1080i) and? March of the Penguins? (1080p) playing a player or HD-DVD? Mr. & Mrs. Smith? (1080p) from a Blu-ray 1080p on your screen. You may be surprised by what you see.
